The 401 (k) contribution limits in 2023 have increased for employees to $22,500. The 2022 limit was $20,500. Employees age 50 and over can make an additional, catch-up contribution of $7,500 ...
For tax year 2022, the catch-up contribution limit remains at $6,500. This means workers 50 and older can kick in a maximum of $27,000 to their 401(k) plans in tax year 2022.
For employees over 50, the catch-up contribution limit is also added to the section 415 limit. Governmental employers in the United States (that is, federal, state, county, and city governments) are currently barred from offering 401(k) retirement plans unless the retirement plan was established before May 1986.
Thus, the overall contribution limit (barring limits) is 20% of 92.9% (that is, 18.6%) of net profit. For example, if a sole proprietor has $50,000 net profit from self-employment on Schedule C, then the "1/2 of self-employment tax credit", $3,532, shown on adjustments to income at the bottom of form 1040 , will be deducted from the net profit.
These limits are different from the limits that apply to 401(k), 403(b), and 457 plans. The SIMPLE plan can technically be funded with either an IRA or a 401(k). There is almost no benefit to funding it with a 401(k), because the lower contribution limits of the SIMPLE are required as is the expensive extra administration of the 401(k).
