The LEGO Group (formally LEGO A/S) is a Danish construction toy production company based in Billund, Denmark. It manufactures Lego -branded toys, consisting mostly of interlocking plastic bricks. The LEGO Group has also built several amusement parks around the world, each known as Legoland , and operates numerous retail stores.
History of Lego. Lego began in 1932 in the carpentry workshop of Ole Kirk Christiansen, a Danish carpenter. He initially produced furniture but later started making wooden toys. The company was named "Lego" in 1934, a contraction from the Danish phrase "leg godt", meaning "play well". Coincidentally, ‘lego’ means ‘I put together’ in Latin.
In 2020, Lego launched its adult-focussed category. Adults also introduce kids to Lego, making them a critical group to the Danish toymaker's growth.
Lego bucked a 7% decline in the global toy market last year as it boosted consumer sales by 4%, notching up revenues of DKK 66 billion ($9.7 billion) for 2023 in the process.
