Mariposa County ( / ˌmærɪˈpoʊzə, - sə / ⓘ) [4] is a county located in the U.S. state of California. As of the 2020 U.S. Census, the population was 17,131. [5] The county seat is Mariposa. [6] It is located in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, north of Fresno, east of Merced, and southeast of Stockton .
Mariposa County includes much of Yosemite National Park, and a good deal of the local economy is related to the park and to tourism. The two-story county courthouse, constructed in 1854, is the oldest in continuous use west of the Rockies.
