Geographic area codes. Geographic (fixed line) area codes are, excluding the STD prefix one digit in Bangkok and nearby provinces (area code 2) and two digits in all other provinces (area codes 3x, 4x, 5x, and 7x). In Thailand, an area code is usually shared by several provinces and roughly follows provincial borders.
ONS coding system. The ONS coding system was a hierarchical code used in the United Kingdom for tabulating census and other statistical data. ONS refers to the Office for National Statistics . It was replaced by the GSS coding system on 1 January 2011.
From 1 June 1999, the new 020 code for London was introduced to replace the 0171 and 0181 codes, re-unifying the London telephone area under one code as it had been under the 01 area code. All the previous seven-digit numbers had a 7 or 8 prefixed to them: (0171) xxx xxxx became (020) 7xxx xxxx. (0181) xxx xxxx became (020) 8xxx xxxx.
Addition of '1' to geographic area codes. On "PhONEday", 16 April 1995, the digit "1" was inserted into all UK geographic area codes, including those in the director, all-figure dialling, ELNS and mixed areas. Under the new changes, for example, Inner London's 071 became 0171; Outer London's 081 became 0181.
This is a list of geographic UK dialling codes covering Wales that are currently in use. Some exchanges cover both sides of the Wales-England border. All geographic telephone numbers in Wales are in the format (01xxx) xxxxxx, with the exception of Cardiff and the surrounding area which has been (029) xxxx xxxx since the "Big Number Change" in 2000.
