In 1928/1929 Alan Gardiner published an overview of hieroglyphs, Gardiner's sign list, the basic modern standard. It describes 763 signs in 26 categories (A–Z, roughly). Georg Möller compiled more extensive lists, organized by historical epoch (published posthumously in 1927 and 1936).

When I start work on that main article (I'm planning to, at some point soon), I think I'm just going to do a copy and paste of the intro from this list to the article and start from there. It's already sourced, it's currently being picked over by the people at FLC, and it'll be a good solid start.
