Carnegie Library of Washington D.C. formerly served as the DCPL's Central Public Library. In October of 1895, in preparation of the library's establishment, founders rented two rooms in the McLean Building at 1517 H Street NW to begin acquiring and processing materials to be used in what would then be called the Washington City Free Library.
Architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe designed the 400,000 square foot (37,000 m 2) steel, brick, and glass structure, an example of modern architecture, in Washington, D.C. This library was Mies's only public library, and his only building constructed in Washington, D.C. [citation needed] The building was completed in 1972 at a cost of $18 million.
The building now houses an Apple store. In September 2016, Apple Inc. proposed renovating the library into D.C.'s second Apple Store location. [2] In December 2016, Events DC announced an agreement with the company for conversion of the space into a new store designed by Foster and Partners.

The Georgetown Neighborhood Library is a branch of the District of Columbia Public Library located in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Established by an Act of Congress in 1934, the library houses the collection of its predecessor Peabody Library, which was founded in 1872 by a donation of George Peabody.
