Kohat is Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's fourth-largest city and is a fast-growing city whose population grew at a rate of more than 3% every year between 1998 and 2017. Karak, Kohat Division's third-largest city, is the largest city and namesake of Karak District. Having a population just over 50,000, it is Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's 24th largest city.
At the time of the 2017 census, the district had 132,985 households and a population of 1,111,266. Kohat had a sex ratio of 999 females per 1000 males and a literacy rate was 58.59% - 77.75% for males and 39.96% for females. 269,926 (24.29%) lived in urban areas. 28.66% of the population were under 10 years of age.
