ISO 3166-1 ( Codes for the representation of names of countries and their subdivisions – Part 1: Country codes) is a standard defining codes for the names of countries, dependent territories, and special areas of geographical interest. It is the first part of the ISO 3166 standard published by the International Organization for Standardization .
The two-letter country codes were used by the US government for geographical data processing in many publications, such as the CIA World Factbook. The standard is also known as DAFIF 0413 ed 7 Amdt. No. 3 (Nov 2003) and as DIA 65-18 ( Defense Intelligence Agency , 1994, "Geopolitical Data Elements and Related Features").

However, the Chicago Manual of Style now recommends use of the uppercase two-letter abbreviations, with the traditional forms as an option. The postal abbreviation is the same as the ISO 3166-2 subdivision code for each of the fifty states. These codes do not overlap with the 13 Canadian subnational postal abbreviations.
