It was founded in 1950 by Henry LaFleur, proprietor of the Bancroft Health Center, a facility specializing in Swedish massage and sports massage since 1938.
The school of massage therapy began in a house on College Avenue in Oakland, CA, and grew steadily. In 1989, the NHI school moved to Emeryville, CA.
