Purpose. The UGC is the apex body of all the affiliated public, private and international universities of Bangladesh. It provides funds for "Government Funded Universities" of Bangladesh. Its mission is to ensure the quality of higher education throughout the country. Private universities must obtain permission from UGC before they operate.
Its previous campus was in Banani, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The campus relocated on 1 November 2014 in Panthapath near Bashundhara City to a modernized building. In 2001, the government of Bangladesh started Birth and Death Registration Project with support from UNICEF. The project was placed under the Local Government Division. The Birth and Death Registration Act 1873 and Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act 1886 were repealed. A new Birth and Death Registration Act was passed in 2004.
