Geography. Ampara District is located in the south east of Sri Lanka in the Eastern Province.It has an area of 4,415 square kilometres (1,705 sq mi). It is bounded by Batticaloa and Polonnaruwa districts from north, Indian Ocean from east, Hambantota District from south, Badulla and Matale districts from northwest and by the Monaragala District from west and southeast.
Ampara (Sinhala: අම්පාර, Tamil: அம்பாறை) is the main town of Ampara District, governed by an Urban Council. It is located in the Eastern Province, Sri Lanka , about 360 km (224 mi) east of Colombo and approximately 60 km (37 mi) south of Batticaloa .
In 1955, the district replaced the province as the country's main administrative unit. The Ampara District was created in April 1961, followed by the creation of the Mullaitivu and Gampaha districts in September 1978 through a new constitution, which also reintroduced the provinces as the main administrative units.
