The Post-Standard was founded in 1829 as The Onondaga Standard. [2] The first issue was published Sept. 10, 1829, after Vivus W. Smith consolidated the Onondaga Journal with the Syracuse Advertiser under The Onondaga Standard name. Through the 1800s, it was known variously as The Weekly Standard, The Daily Standard and The Syracuse Standard.

The station began operations on February 15, 1950, on VHF channel 5 with the call sign WSYR-TV, moving to VHF channel 3 in 1953. It was owned by Advance Publications (the Newhouse family's company) along with the Syracuse Post-Standard, Syracuse Herald-Journal, and WSYR radio (AM 570 and FM 94.5, now WYYY).
It was the first time the Syracuse Post Office offered such a program. Mr. Caffrey was a communicant of St. Anthony of Padua Church, a member of the Post 41 American Legion, the Citizen’s Club, of which he served as director, the Knights of Columbus, and was an Intelligence officer in the 108th Infantry of the New York National Guard.
