Havre de Grace ( / hævər dɪˈɡreɪs / ), [2] abbreviated HdG, is a city in Harford County, Maryland, United States. It is situated at the mouth of the Susquehanna River and the head of Chesapeake Bay. It is named after the port city of Le Havre, France, which in full was once Le Havre de Grâce ( French, "Harbor of Grace").

Vandiver was a Democrat. He served in the Maryland House of Delegates in 1876, 1878, 1880, and 1892. In 1881, he was defeated by Herman Stump. He was one of the signers of the charter of Havre de Grace and served as mayor from 1885 to 1886. In 1892, he served as Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates.

The Havre de Grace Colored School Museum and Cultural Center is located at 555 Alliance Street, Havre de Grace, Maryland, in the buildings of the former Havre de Grace Colored High School. The buildings have been partially restored and in 2022 donations were being sought to complete the work. [1] [2]

He defended Havre de Grace, Maryland, during the Raid on Havre de Grace on May 3, 1813, during the War of 1812. He then served as lighthouse keeper at Concord Point Light from 1827 to his death.
