The English writer W. Somerset Maugham reverses the moral order in a different way in his short story, "The Ant and The Grasshopper" (1924). It concerns two brothers, one of whom is a dissolute waster whose hard-working brother has constantly to bail out of difficulties.
The story was published in the September 1841 issue of Graham's Magazine as "Never Bet Your Head: A Moral Tale". Its republication in the August 16, 1845, issue of the Broadway Journal included its now-standard title "Never Bet the Devil Your Head". Noted Poe biographer Arthur Hobson Quinn dismissed the story, stating "it is a trifle."

" A Good Man Is Hard to Find " is a Southern gothic short story first published in 1953 by author Flannery O'Connor who, in her own words, described it as "the story of a family of six which, on its way driving to Florida [from Georgia ], is slaughtered by an escaped convict who calls himself the Misfit".
