Grant County is the most southwestern county in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 51,938. [2] Its county seat is Lancaster and its largest city is Platteville. [3] The county is named after the Grant River, in turn named after a fur trader who lived in the area when Wisconsin was a territory. [4]
Hanmer Robbins (December 11, 1815 – July 9, 1890) was a teacher from Platteville, Wisconsin who served several times as a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly . He was born in Deerfield, New York. [1] He moved to Platteville, Wisconsin in May 1837 and began teaching the village school.
He moved to Grant County, Wisconsin, in 1854 and read law in the office of attorney Stephen O. Paine, in Platteville. He taught school to help with his expenses, and, in December 1857, he was admitted to the Wisconsin Bar at Lancaster, Wisconsin. He established his own legal practice in Platteville, which he maintained for the next four years.

Captain William Beebe was a New York native, a Civil War vet, a lawyer, mayor of Platteville, and an inventor.

The Grant County Courthouse, built in 1902, is an historic glass-and-copper-domed county courthouse building located at 126 West Main Street in Lancaster, Wisconsin. Designed by Armand D. Koch in the Classical Revival style, it was built of red sandstone.
