Teaneck (/ ˈ t iː n ɛ k /) is a township in Bergen County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey.It is a bedroom community in the New York metropolitan area. As of the 2020 United States census, the township's population was 41,246, an increase of 1,470 (+3.7%) from the 2010 census count of 39,776, which in turn reflected an increase of 516 (+1.3%) from the 39,260 counted in the 2000 census.
New Jersey revised township organization in 1899, and in 1910 Teaneck moved to a five-man township committee. On January 1, 1930, the Township selected its last chairman, Lacey Walker. Katz was born on July 16, 1974, in Teaneck, New Jersey. He attended Torah Academy of Bergen County and graduated from Touro College . Katz was elected to the Teaneck Township Council in 1997. [4] He was elected Mayor of Teaneck in 2006, making him the youngest person to serve in that office as well as the first Orthodox Jew.
On April 10, 1990, Phillip C. Pannell, an African-American teenager, was shot and killed by Gary Spath, a white police officer in Teaneck, New Jersey. Pannell, who police suspected of possessing a pistol, was running from police when he was shot in the back with his hands raised. Spath was later charged and acquitted of manslaughter. [1]
