Maintaining a consistent abbreviation style allows Wikipedia to be read, written, edited, and navigated more easily by readers and editors.
The article now states "Except for CT, the second letter of the postal abbreviation is found in the GPO abbreviation for the state." According to the GPO web site, the GPO abbreviation for Connecticut is CT, same as the USPS abbreviation. In fact, all GPO state abbreviations are the same as the USPS ones.
List of U.S. states. The following table is a list of all 50 states and their respective dates of statehood. The first 13 became states in July 1776 upon agreeing to the United States Declaration of Independence, and each joined the first Union of states between 1777 and 1781, upon ratifying the Articles of Confederation, its first constitution.
The title of this article is "List of U.S. state abbreviations" but it mixes up abbreviations, codes, and symbols without defining the differences. It does say in places there are postal codes and codes from other places, and that there are abbreviations from the AP Stylebook.
US is a commonly used abbreviation for United States, although U.S. – with periods and without a space – remains common in North American publications, including in news journalism. Multiple American style guides, including The Chicago Manual of Style (since 2010), now deprecate "U.S." and recommend "US".
