The equivalent of the Department of Motor Vehicles in other states, it is responsible for titling, registering and inspecting automobiles, and issuing driver's licenses.
Registrants provided their own license plates for display until 1908, when the state began to issue plates. [1] As of 2024, plates are issued by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.
