Since 1952, it has conducted the well-known decennial Sight and Sound Poll of the Greatest Films of All Time.
It was also ranked top in every Sight & Sound critics' poll between 1962 and 2002, and the directors' poll in 1992 and 2002. The American Film Institute polled 1,500 film community leaders for the lists 100 Years...100 Movies and the 10th Anniversary Edition in 1998 and 2007 respectively, asking voters to choose from a list of 400 nominations.
