Urdu (one of the main languages of South Asia), which uses a calligraphic version of the Arabic-based Nastaʿlīq script, requires a great number of ligatures in digital typography. InPage, a widely used desktop publishing tool for Urdu, uses Nastaliq fonts with over 20,000 ligatures.
The "patterns" for the originals from which the punches were created, the punches, and the whole stock of remaining matrices were destroyed. The font has disappeared except for the matrices in the possession of various printers. Sample sheets of these fonts are particularly difficult to find and are lacking in many collections.
