The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band ( NGDB) is an American country rock band formed in 1966. The group has existed in various forms since its founding in Long Beach, California. [2] Between 1976 and 1981, the band performed and recorded as the Dirt Band . Constant members since the early times are singer-guitarist Jeff Hanna and drummer Jimmie Fadden.

In a race dubbed "mile of the century", Ibbotson won, the time was a new world record, taking 0.8 of a second off John Landy's time of 3.58 min set in 1954. Ibbotson continued competing in mile races throughout the season as well as some longer distance events - and ended the season exhausted. Ibbotson never found the same form again.
