Rosholt was born in 1923 in Glasgow, Montana. His parents were Carl Lauritz Rosholt (1881–1952) and Ida Emilia Solem (1893–1926). He has one younger brother, Norman Tegnear Rosholt. Rosholt attended Luther College, but was interrupted by World War II. During the war, he served with the 95th Infantry Division.
