Clematis is a genus of about 380 species [2][3] within the buttercup family, Ranunculaceae. [4] Their garden hybrids and cultivars have been popular among gardeners, [5] beginning with Clematis 'Jackmanii', a garden staple since 1862; more cultivars are being produced constantly. They are mainly of Chinese and Japanese origin.
Clematis aristata is a popular hardy garden plant. It prefers a semi-shaded or shaded position and cool deep soils and will withstand heavy pruning. [5] It is a vigorous climber and may become a problem by smothering other plants. Propagation can be carried out from fresh seed and from cuttings of semi-hardened stems.
Description. Clematis terniflora is a vine with opposite, pinnately compound leaves, on climbing stems. The flowers are white, borne in fall. [3] The blooms are nicely fragrant and visited by bees. In late fall, the fertilized flowers become fruit (seed) clusters of 5-6 fruits connected at the heads and each having a long white tail.
