Early history (1994–1996) Upon the April 1994 renaming of Jerry and David's Guide to the World Wide Web to Yahoo!, Yang and Filo said that "Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle" was a suitable backronym for this name, but they insisted they had selected the name because they liked the word's general definition, as in Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift: "rude, unsophisticated, uncouth."
Yahoo gave reduced usage of the site as the reason for shutting down, saying "it has become less popular over the years." The archivist group Archive Team and others worked to archive the site to preserve in the Internet Archive. The group was able to archive 4.75 TB of data during the "read only" period, but not the full site.

Groups Neo[ edit] Yahoo! Groups have been going through (another undocumented) transformation codenamed "neo" for the last three weeks. The press, as usual, has not caught on, or is too busy talking about Marissa Mayer 's latest glamour endeavor, so there is nothing that can be added to Wikipedia.
