Founded in 1997, it is the first private university within Malaysia and is a member of The Alliance of Government Linked Universities (GLU).
Its buildings were completed in 1976 and officiated in 1983 as Sekolah Menengah Sains Melaka, later renamed Sekolah Muzaffar Syah Melaka after the fourth Sultan of the Malacca Sultanate.
