Mervyn's was an American middle-scale department store chain based in Hayward, California, and founded by Mervin G. Morris (1920–2021). [1] It carried national brands of clothing, footwear, bedding, bath products, furniture, jewelry, beauty products, electronics, toys, and housewares.
Target owned Mervyn's from 1978 to 2004. Pictured here is the location at Boise Towne Square in Boise, Idaho (store #220). In 1975, Target opened two stores, reaching 49 units in nine states and $511 million (~$2.25 billion in 2023) in sales. In November 2012, West Covina's first Walmart opened at the Eastland Center at 120,000 sq ft, replacing Mervyn's and Levitz which closed in 2009 as a result of the chains' bankruptcies. [2] On February 26, 2024, it was announced that the Walmart location would be closing and the store closed on March 29, 2024.
The store was founded by Harry S. Webb (d. 1947) in 1917 in Downtown Glendale in a single room. [1][2] It had locations in the Glendale Fashion Center and in Redlands, California. Ned Blanc purchased the store from Webb in 1949 but kept the name. In 1951 Blanc expanded the original store at 139 N. Brand into the adjacent Lawson Building.
