Amory / ˈ eɪ. m ər. i / is a city in Monroe County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 6,666 at the 2020 census , down from 7,316 in 2010 . Located in the northeastern part of the state near the Alabama border, it was founded in 1887 as a railroad town by the Kansas City, Memphis and Birmingham Railroad .
Description. The Hester Site is located in northeastern Mississippi, near the city of Amory in Monroe County. The full extent of the site is unknown, because it has only been subjected to limited excavation, in 1974-75 and again in 1978. The site has three clearly delineated soil types, each of which contains a complex of features and finds.
History. The monument was erected in Amory, Mississippi in 1924 by the local chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, during a time when many similar Confederate monuments were being erected throughout the Southern United States. The Mississippian Railway was established in 1923 primarily to haul lumber products from Fulton south to the interchange with the Frisco Railway in Amory.. In 1944 a bentonite plant was built in Smithville to take advantage of a large deposit discovered there which led to a surge in business for the line and its nickname The Bentonite Road.
