History. National Cheng Kung University was originally established under Japanese colonial government in January 1931 as the Tainan Technical College. After the Japanese handover of Taiwan in October 1945, the school was renamed to Taiwan Provincial Tainan Junior College of Technology in March 1946, and then to Taiwan Provincial College of Engineering in October the same year.
National Taiwan University is widely considered to be the best university in Taiwan. NTU was ranked 69th worldwide in the QS World University Rankings 2024, [42] 187th worldwide in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023, 203rd worldwide in the US News 2022-2023, and 201-300th worldwide in the ARWU 2022.
Closely following National Taiwan University, National Cheng Kung University, National Jiao Tong University, National Tsing Hua University, and National Yang Ming University, it is the only private university among the six domestic universities which made it into the world's top 500.
This publication ranks world universities by a certain criteria of scientific paper volume, impact, and performance output. The ranking was originally published from 2007 to 2011 by the Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan [3] and has been published since 2012 by the National Taiwan University.
