Michigan's 5th congressional district is a United States congressional district in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The district is represented by Democrat Dan Kildee. His uncle, Dale Kildee, previously represented the district.  It is a mostly industrial area,  with Arenac County, Iosco County, and Tuscola County being the main exceptions.
The 5th Michigan Infantry was organized at Detroit, Michigan and mustered into Federal service for a three-year enlistment on August 28, 1861. In October 1862 the Army of the Potomac was reorganized. The 5th Michigan, along with the 17th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment, was placed in the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 3rd Corps.

Coached by Bennie Oosterbaan, the Wolverines won the Big Ten Conference championship with a record of 6–3–1 (4–1–1 in conference) and defeated California in the 1951 Rose Bowl, 14–6.
