Urdu ( Nastaliq: اردو; / ˈʊərduː /; ALA-LC: Urdū) is an Indo-Aryan language spoken chiefly in South Asia.   It is the national language and lingua franca of Pakistan, where it is also an official language alongside English. 
Urdu Wikipedia (Urdu: اردو ویکیپیڈیا), started in January 2004, is the Standard Urdu edition of Wikipedia, a free, open-content encyclopedia. As of 14 September 2023, it has 194,270 articles, 168,326 registered users and 14,228 files, and it is the 55th largest edition of Wikipedia by article count, and ranks 20th in terms of depth among Wikipedias with over 150,000 articles.

However, Urdu and English are the two official languages of Pakistan. Pashto has no official status at the federal level. On a provincial level, Pashto is the regional language of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and north Balochistan. Yet, the primary medium of education in government schools in Pakistan is Urdu.
