They were led by twenty-fourth-year head coach Sue Semrau, who returned after taking a season-long break and retired following the season.

As a freshman, he averaged 4.7 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. As a sophomore, he averaged 9.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game.
Florida State went 202-131 under Kennedy, posting a .607 winning percentage. In his first season coaching in the ACC, Kennedy set a then-record for road wins (6) and total ACC wins (11) by a first-year coach. Kennedy's teams featured some of the best players in FSU history.
