As Tokyo city's suburbs grew rapidly in the early 20th century, many towns and villages in Tokyo were merged or promoted over the years. In 1932, five complete districts with their 82 towns and villages were merged into Tokyo City and organised in 20 new wards. Also, by 1940, there were two more cities in Tokyo: Hachiōji City and Tachikawa City.
The special wards (特別区, tokubetsu-ku) are 23 municipalities that together make up the core and the most populous part of Tokyo Metropolis, Japan. Together, they occupy the land that was originally the Tokyo City before it was abolished in 1943 to become part of the newly created Tokyo Metropolis.
A ward (区, ku) is a subdivision of the cities of Japan that are large enough to have been designated by government ordinance. [1] Wards are used to subdivide each city designated by government ordinance ("designated city").
Tokyo 24th district 東京都第24区 (Tōkyō-to dai 24-ku) is a single-member constituency of the House of Representatives, the lower house of the national Diet of Japan. It is located in western Tokyo and consists of most of Hachiōji City. The seat is held by Kōichi Hagiuda since 2012.
