Eventually, Roanoke County decided to build a second high school for the Southwest region of the county. The name "Hidden Valley" was selected to correspond to Hidden Valley Middle School. The high school is not in the Hidden Valley section of Roanoke County and is a little over 3 miles (4.8 km) from the middle school.

Hargrave Military Academy was founded in 1909 by T. Ryland Sanford and J. Hunt Hargrave as the Chatham Training School (CTS).
